How to rename Circles and change their ordering

How to rename Circles and change their ordering

I have seen many questions about this on my Google+ stream so here I’m sharing my simple guide and instructions on how to rename your circles in Google+ Circles and change the order by which they appear on your stream page.

How to rename circles and change their ordering on your Google+ stream page

  1. Go to Circles
  2. Right click with your mouse on the circle you want to Edit
  3. Click on “Edit Circle
  4. Click on “Rename”
  5. *Click on “Save” after you are done

Google+ allows you to rename the default circles.

If you rename your circles so that they start with a number (1. Family, 1.1. Friends, etc.) you will be able to organize them in a more personalized way.

Please be aware that only the first five circles will appear on the stream page by default. Hope this helps.

Find me on Google+ and please leave your thoughts in the comments.

Am I missing something? How do you change the order? I tried adding numbers but it didn’t do anything.

    Hi Jon T,

We’re not sure why it’s not working for you but can guarantee that if you follow the steps above that you will be able to change their ordering. If adding a “1.” is not working have you tried adding “1_”?

It shouldn’t make any difference but just wondering if you’re using some other identified/character for ordering of your Circles.

    Hope this helps!

I tried that but it didn’t work :( I’ve tried every combination I can think of but nothing seems to affect it. I sent some feedback to Google about it, although I’m sure they are swamped already. This is the only thing that’s really bothered me so far with G+.

My Circles haven’t got any extravagant names, even renaming the default ones had no affect, which has me wondering, did you first delete the default circles before attempting this?

I tried this as well using both 1. and 1_

Neither one changed the order of my circles. I refreshed my page. I signed out and signed back in. Here’s a link to a screen shot of my Circles on the Stream page just to eliminate the possibility that I’ve simply made an error following your instructions.

Had tried adding “!” to the circle I wanted at top of list, to no avail, then searched and found your post, and tried numbers instead (both “1. ” and “1_” etc.) – still no luck. Maybe with the influx of signups, Google has limited some functionality? No idea, but I’m reasonably savvy with these things, but I can’t get anywhere with this… I’d be curious to know if you were *still* able to reorder your circles.

(Also, fwiw, am using Chrome browser.)

I had this thought as well, but it seems strange that they would limit a useful functionality when they provide no other way of easily doing it, and imo it should be just that. Easy. When they allow so many other useful and fun little scripts to run, I can’t imagine they would revoke this ability. Maybe an oversight? A big one if you ask me!

I can’t reorder either. I’m using Safari to get to Google+, and following those steps doesn’t do anything at all. I just end up with an out-of-order list of numbers.

I can’t see why they would limit that particular functionality due to volume. It doesn’t seem like it would have much overhead.

    I can’t reorder either.

A lot of you seem to be having problems with this – check out this post http://goo.gl/3odZH and see if it helps. Until such time as a way is introduced to re-order Circles, I think this is the best bet…

Neither my streams nor my circles are listed in alphabetical order. I suspect that’s why numbering doesn’t change the order for me. Is there a setting to list them in alphabetical order somewhere?

    • srand 25 July 2011 at 5:13 am #

Ah. I just found a comment on another blog about this that suggests the circles are listed in alphabetical order only on the mobile app, not in the browser. Can anyone mobile confirm?

      • Steve 28 July 2011 at 10:15 am #

@srand – Yes can confirm that on the mobile app the circles are sorted alphabetically and when I renamed them to numeric approach when I went back to the mobile they were sorted numerically. Now all I want is for the website g+ to do the same! Here’s hoping

I cannot rename or reorder my circles from Google + mobile, is there a trick? or is this just a bug that hasn’t been addressed yet?

Hmmm, the dreaded right click… it should be more obvious as most people do not browse the web with right-clicks in mind.
